Supporting Student Mental Wellness

Awarded to an instructor who recognizes and accommodates student concerns around mental wellness above and beyond what is already mandated by the Faculty. Including but not limited to:

  • Connecting students to resources
  • Engaging in periodic check-ins with students and/or encourages their teaching teams to do the same
  • Fostering an overall safe and inclusive environment for mental wellness to be discussed and respected
  • Ensuring responsiveness to student feedback on student wellness

EDI (Equity, Diversity, Inclusion) in the Classroom

Awarded to an instructor who respects and promotes the EDI responsibility of engineers through course curriculum and personal actions. Including but not limited to instructors who:

  • Use course examples that relate to real equity concepts
  • Provide diversity historical context around examples
  • Bridge gaps of equity through supporting incoming students of varying degrees of past experiences and access to resources.
  • Establishes an inclusive environment through discussions or acknowledgements of marginalized individuals
  • Recognize the diverse landscape of cultures and ideologies that exist in the context of engineering studies

Supporting International Student Experience

Awarded to an instructor who respects the specific challenges of international students in the context of studying in different time zones. Through actions including but not limited to:

  • Accommodating students of varying time zones (ex: allowing extended windows for starting assessments)
  • Providing access to different modes of delivering course content (eg. recorded short videos, asynchronous lectures, etc.)
  • Performing synchronous lectures during international time zones
  • In general, going out of their way to support international students

Best Online Learning Experience

Awarded to an instructor who recognizes and adjusts to the challenges of an online atmosphere for students in regards to remote learning. Through actions including but not limited to:

  • Engaging students through course content, course composition, and deliverables.
  • Fostering an inclusive and immersive online academic environment.
  • Organizing and coordinating a course schedule for the semester.
  • Using various teaching methods to deliver course content in an online context.

This award is specific to COVID-19 Online Year

Best Upper Year Instructor

Awarded to an instructor who demonstrated all around excellence in teaching and support of students. Through actions including but not limited to:

  • Providing a strong classroom and course content experience
  • Going above and beyond expectations with respect to supporting students
  • Fostering a meaningful community in and around the course
  • Positively and meaningfully impacting the lives of students
  • Maintaining a strong effort to make the course understandable and interesting

Best First Year Instructor

Awarded to an instructor who recognizes and responds to the unique challenges experienced by first-year students during their transition from high school to university (especially during the first semester). Through actions including but not limited to:

  • Including some kind of transition content exploring the differences in workload, atmosphere and teaching methods with respect to university life
  • Remaining open to student feedback on course structure and workload
  • Providing a strong overall classroom and course content experience
  • Fostering a meaningful community in and around the course
